Purdue Podcast Lectures.

The availability of lectures broadcast over the internet from Purdue University was reported in this weeks Chronicle. This is an awesome resource that I hope does not go away due to bandwidth issues. There is no image but the shear variety of courses makes this an experiment to watch closely. I am following the CHM (http://www.chem.purdue.edu/people/faculty.asp) podcasts with interest.

I would really like to hear this class:  :o)cosine:o(

What is the healthiest water?

Is soft water better for consumption than hard? According to the sales representative I met today for http://www.ionics.com/ it is! Well of course it is, especially when you are trying to make a quick sale on a 4k combined RO, activated carbon and ion exchange system. Now I do have to admit that it did taste better, and we could possibly save $450 a month on domestic cleaning products and our fuel bill.

It would seem that there is one camp who believes that it is better to drink 'natural' contaminant free RO water (with a pre-treatment softening) as it would 'cleanse' your system by washing out the harmful 'toxins'. Others believe that humans have been drinking groundwater, with all that 'added stuff' for millennia and that this is water's natural state.

After firing up Google I found some very interesting toxicological information on water hardness. It seems that there are 30 years of epidemiological studies that have found an inverse (protective) association between drinking water hardness and cardiovascular disease mortality. Go figure.

Demo of the day: Oscillating Methanol Demo [1], [2], [3].

This one needed a little bit of tinkering with. A piece of copper wire was attached to the $150 piece of platinum wire which had been coiled in order to increase the surface area. The first combustion is more violent than the later ones and may take you by surprise. Despite what [3] says, there is no need to heat the methanol, although the addition of methyl blue makes it more interesting to watch. Now I need to find some boric acid. Today I was faced with my worst nightmare...a mind numbing assault of 7 hours of Edu-speak [1], [2], [3]. If you're interested here is a glossary.

The book 'How People Learn' was enthusiastically heralded as 'a great read' in my class both today and yesterday. I read the first Amazon review (2 stars, I would give the review 5) and decided it was worth a look.

I also learnt today that it is possible to suffer from word exhaustion. Are some words necessary? Maybe...if you're going to use the following please make sure it is used sparingly, and preferably in red type.
